Workplace Ergonomics for Optimal Health and Energy: A How-to Guide

Written By Duluth Chiropractic and Wellness Center on February 4, 2021

Workplace ErgonomicsThe typical office worker spends up to 15 hours seated every day. This can lead to a variety of health issues, including neck and back pain. Proper workplace ergonomics can help prevent these conditions.

3 Ways to Improve Workplace Ergonomics

Slouching in front of a computer leads to vertebral misalignment, which puts pressure on the muscles and soft tissues in the back. You may experience back and neck aches as a result.

The uptick in telecommuting due to the COVID-19 pandemic has made matters worse, as many Americans are working from their couches or kitchen tables. In a survey by the American Chiropractic Association, 92% of chiropractors reported seeing more back and neck pain patients as a result.

You don't want to be just another statistic. Here's how to practice good workplace ergonomics:

1. Set Up a Spine-Friendly Workspace

The vertebrae in your spine form a slight "S" shape. Invest in a desk chair with lumbar support, which helps preserve the curve in your lower back. Set up your computer monitor on your desk to look straight ahead while working—not up or down, which stresses the neck.

2. Practice Neutral Posture

Neutral posture decreases stress on the spine, muscles, and soft tissues. The workspace setup described above facilitates neutral posture—but you still have to remember to practice it. Sit with your shoulders back and head straight. When you use your computer keyboard, your elbows should be at a 90-degree angle.

3. Make Time for Movement

Even with proper workplace ergonomics, it's not healthy to sit at your desk for extended periods. Stand up from your desk every 30 minutes, even if it's just to get a glass of water. This will keep your circulation going and loosen up muscle tension.
