Understanding the Safety of Chiropractic Care

Written By Duluth Chiropractic and Wellness Center on May 30, 2018

Chiropractic care has long been considered a safe and effective way to treat musculoskeletal pain as well as headaches, dizziness, and a whole range of other complaints and disorders.

The safety of chiropractic care is due to highly skilled practitioners; the non-invasive, drug-free treatments; and individualized patient care.

The Safety of Chiropractic Care

Chiropractors must undergo rigorous training before being licensed. They participate in four-year doctoral-level graduate programs, as well as internships and laboratory practice.

In fact, they spend as many hours in training as allopathic doctors (MDs).

As a testament to their skill, chiropractors are hailed as physician-level providers by many insurance providers, including Medicare and Medicaid, as well as Federal Workers’ Comp programs and the U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs.

The Biggest Difference Between Allopathic and Chiropractic Care

One difference between chiropractic and allopathic programs is that chiropractors focus on minimally or non-invasive methods of treatment, with less reliance on medications for the prevention and treatment of pain.

In view of today’s rising opioid addiction statistics, any treatments that focus on healing without resorting to drugs are preferable.

The safety of chiropractic care is also due to the fact that chiropractors tend to treat patients holistically — meaning they are not simply resolving one or more symptoms, but finding the root cause of a patient’s discomfort.

Finding a Good Chiropractor

At a minimum, your chiropractic caregiver should be Board Certified by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners. Beyond that, you’ll want to make sure you and your chiropractor are a good fit.

At your first visit, make sure you ask any questions you have about care and procedures. Some good basic questions are:

  • What services do they provide?
  • What therapies are available?
  • What is their goal regarding care plans?
  • Are they willing to work with a primary care doctor?
