Treating Symptoms from Whiplash with Chiropractic Care

Written By Duluth Chiropractic and Wellness Center on December 4, 2017

It’s an old television trope: Someone is trying to con a jury or an insurance company, and they show up in a whiplash collar. Inevitably, a good samaritan will “out” the person in the cervical collar – usually by surprising them so they turn their head quickly.

These stories can give the mistaken impression that whiplash isn’t a serious condition or one that can become chronic. However, in opposition to the stereotype that people complaining of whiplash far after an accident are simply malingerers, “late whiplash” may be in fact quite common.

“Late whiplash” refers to chronic neck pain that shows up, delayed, after a car accident. It could be days, weeks, or even months.

According to one study, car accidents may account for approximately 45% of all chronic neck and back pain.

The authors of the study estimate that 15.5 million Americans may have chronic pain due to late whiplash.

If you have whiplash, or chronic pain after a neck injury from a car accident, then you know how frustrating it can be. Neck pain can be further aggravated by desk jobs where a lot of time spent on the computer.

If left untreated, chronic neck pain can cause other issues in the musculoskeletal system, as well as the nervous system. Back pain, pinched nerves, and loss of movement in the neck can result.

Believe it or not, treating symptoms from whiplash with chiropractic care is actually much more effective than conventional treatments. This is especially true for late whiplash or chronic neck pain. Conventional treatment is not very effective. But one study found that 93% of whiplash patients improved after chiropractic treatment.

Chiropractic treatment for whiplash may include approaches such as spinal manipulation, muscle relaxation, muscle stimulation, exercises, and lifestyle adjustments.

Chiropractic care for whiplash is not just about managing symptoms, which is what pain pills do, but correcting any underlying imbalance in the musculoskeletal system that may be causing the pain.
