Muscle Spasms Caused by Pinched Nerves

Written By Duluth Chiropractic and Wellness Center on June 30, 2018

Muscle spasms are a common occurrence for many people. These painful, sometimes debilitating cramp-like spasms can cause excruciating pain — sometimes for days, weeks, or months.

While they can be caused by many things, muscle spasms can originate from a pinched nerve.

The Connection Between Muscle Spasms and Pinched Nerves

A pinched nerve can occur anywhere along the spinal column and anywhere that nerves pass close to joints, tendons, and ligaments.

Often, pinched nerves are the result of arthritis that causes bone spurs, calcified protrusions, or herniated discs that press on nerves running alongside joints.

Your nerves run in bundles, like a hose. When the hose gets pinched by bone spurs or other swellings, the nerves cease to receive signals from the brain, like a hose that gets a kink in it.

Muscle Spasms - Symptoms of Pinched Nerves

Pinched nerves can cause numbness, tingling, and even shooting pain. When muscles are not receiving the correct electrical signals from the brain due to a compressed nerve, they can contract painfully.

Anyone who’s experienced a muscle spasm knows just how horrible they can be.

How to Relieve a Muscle Spasm Caused by Pinched Nerves

You can try hot-cold therapy — alternating warm compresses with ice packs — gentle stretching, or pain relievers for short-term relief.

If pain persists more than a few days, however, consider seeing a chiropractor — a specialist who can resolve your pain quickly and non-invasively.

Studies show that chiropractic care is very successful at relieving the pain of muscle contraction caused by pinched nerves.

Chiropractors use spinal manipulation and other therapies to gently realign your joints properly and to stimulate soft tissues to heal.

In this way, they help reduce inflammation in the affected area, which helps relieve pain without the use of drugs or invasive treatments.
